Beijing Travel Guide III: Autumn Red Leaves of the Capital

2007/10/21 15:58:08

Autumn — Beijing's finest season — has now reached its most golden stretch. The red leaves near Xiangshan are famous, but the place is far too crowded, nothing compared to the natural, artless red leaves on countless nameless hills. Here's an ancient-style poem, serving as a travel guide for friends who can't make it to Beijing right now.

Autumn Red Leaves of the Capital

Chán Zhōng Shuō Chán

How fine the autumn light of the capital

Red leaves fill the northwest

Layered and dense, dyed by frost

Five colors stream in hues

The high sky holds ten thousand forms

The floating scene shifts in an instant

Leisurely the sunlight turns

Gathering clouds and rosy silks weave

A soaring kite climbs the pepper-hill summit

Far and distant, gazing toward heaven's edge
