Detailed Explanation of the Lunyu: For All Those Who Misinterpret Confucius (36)
2006/11/30 11:38:31
The Master said: Without wisdom, one's mission cannot make one a gentleman; without wisdom, propriety cannot be established; without wisdom, speech cannot bring wisdom to people.
Yang Bojun: Confucius said: "Without understanding destiny, one cannot become a gentleman; without understanding propriety, one cannot establish oneself in society; without the ability to distinguish others' words, one cannot know people."
Qian Mu: The Master said: "Without understanding destiny, there's no way to be a gentleman. Without understanding the ritual system, there's no way to establish oneself. Without understanding language, there's no way to judge people."
Li Zehou: Confucius said: "Without knowing destiny, one cannot be a gentleman. Without knowing propriety, one cannot stand among people. Without knowing speech, one cannot know people."
Detailed Explanation: The above interpretations are all based on the following punctuation: "Without knowing destiny, one cannot be a gentleman. Without knowing propriety, one cannot establish oneself. Without knowing speech, one cannot know people." — and correspondingly maintain the absurd logic of "self-centrism." Only here the logical relationships are disguised as "destiny, propriety, speech," and the assumption is that once one possesses the so-called ability to know these "destiny, propriety, speech," one can receive the big red envelopes of "being a gentleman, establishing oneself, knowing people." The absurdity of this logic has been extensively discussed previously and need not be repeated.
The correct punctuation should be: "Without wisdom, one's mission cannot make one a gentleman; without wisdom, propriety cannot be established; without wisdom, speech cannot bring wisdom to people." What is discussed here are the various consequences of "not knowing" — of lacking wisdom. "Zhī" (知) is the original character of "zhì" (智, wisdom). "Not knowing" (不知) means lacking wisdom. The "not knowing" here refers not only to the individual person but also to the society of "people not knowing" itself. "Destiny/mission, propriety, speech" — none of these are purely individual phenomena. In the socialized existence of humanity, all are related to society itself. Unfortunately, under two thousand years of rotten Confucian meddling, these have been treated as empty-headed abstractions, as something a priori, completely violating the Confucian fundamental stance of grounding itself in reality.
"Mìng" (命) — mission. Even the Daoists can say "My fate is determined by me, not by heaven" — let alone the Confucians. In Chinese culture, the view of fate and destiny has always been far more positive and powerful than the Western tradition represented by ancient Greek tragedy. For the individual, "My fate is determined by me, not by heaven," thus "mìng" is merely one's mission — a mission not assigned by God, but coming from oneself. Heaven and earth are one's stage. Without wisdom, one cannot understand this "My fate is determined by me, not by heaven" — one believes that one's destiny is arranged by heaven, that slaves can only be slaves and rulers can only be rulers. Yet one doesn't know that all of this is "made by people." Only by breaking through this nonsense about heavenly mandate and destiny can one truly take on the real mission of being human. Only thus can one become a genuine gentleman capable of practicing "the Way of the Sage."
"Lǐ" (礼) — propriety, the most basic normal social order constituted by the various bottom lines of human relationships in society. If there are no minimum bottom lines between people in society, then society can only be a heap of loose sand, yielding only to various forms of violence and law. Violence and law are only needed when society cannot function normally. In a normal society, violence and law are last resorts. Yet people without wisdom, a society without wisdom, believe only in violence and law, abandoning all bottom lines. Thus, "propriety" cannot be established, the system connecting human relationships in society breaks apart, and society can only exist in turmoil.
"Yán" (言) — speech, discourse, including all speech and public discourse in social reality. A person without wisdom, a society without wisdom — their speech is insufficient to make people wise, and speech without wisdom cannot produce wisdom; it can only continue to create confusion and folly. Speech and action are closely related. Especially in a society with developed speech and media, the shaping effect of "speech" on people and on society cannot be overestimated.
Chán Zhōng Shuō Chán's Vernacular Translation
The Master said: Without wisdom, one's mission cannot make one a gentleman. Without wisdom, propriety cannot be established. Without wisdom, speech cannot bring wisdom to people.
Confucius said: Without wisdom, it is impossible to undertake the mission of a gentleman; without wisdom, it is impossible to establish normal social order; without wisdom, it is impossible to produce speech that brings wisdom to people.

A verse for the banner image: "The flower path has never been swept for a guest; the brushwood gate opens today for the first time for you."
May I ask the Lady Zen Master: will bank stocks have basically finished correcting before December 11?
===========
Actually, letting them correct for a longer time would be healthier. In this wave, let other stocks perform while banks do ascending triangle or flag consolidations here — that's better for the mid-term overall market trend. As said yesterday, the key right now is China Merchants Bank. It was the first to break through its all-time high. Its trend is the bellwether for the entire market.
In sum
Second-tier stocks are the ones that will perform most in the next phase, followed by third-tier. Grasp the rhythm.

Host: Luqiao Construction really did pull a solid bullish candle just as you evaluated. But I had already sold. After hearing your advice, I bought back in the next day. Now I'm slightly underwater. Getting trapped in a market like this is embarrassing, but there's nothing I can do.
============
Once you sell a stock, how can you buy it back? There's more than one stock in the world — what you throw away, don't pick back up.
Have a better mindset.
缠中说禅 2006/11/30 12:18:28
Since you've already made the mistake, just go with it. Mid-term there's no big issue for now. But absolutely never operate like this again.
Note
Don't sell a stock just because it's risen a lot. There's only one situation that requires selling: when the stock shows weakness.

Host, by what standard do you categorize stocks into first, second, and third tier?
Because I can't figure it out, I don't dare to enter now — I'm just watching
================
There's no very clear standard for this — it's all conventional. For example, Development Bank is first-tier; Shenfang is third-tier — this is historically formed. Of course, performance plays some role, but it's not the only factor.

May I ask, little sister,
What is the sign that a stock is showing weakness?
Breaking the 5-day moving average?

Don't get into the habit of such mechanical thinking. Everything is based on actual conditions. Different capital sizes, different skill levels determine different operating standards. But one thing is the same: take the initiative by setting your own standards before trading.

Market's opening, heading off first. The validity of the breakout needs to be confirmed this afternoon and over the next two days. Whether the market can follow this ID's suggestion — let's continue watching.
缠中说禅 2006/11/30 15:13:57
Today's market moved very cleanly. At 2 PM, as expected, a plunge confirmed the breakout's validity, then continued upward. The only shortcoming was deploying bank stocks for the final push — this is related to capital competition between the Shenzhen and Shanghai markets, which shows up in every rally. Whoever breaks the historical high first brings significant benefits to the respective market's administrators.
Some volatility tomorrow would be normal. As long as the 5-day line holds, the possibility of this ID's suggestion for the market becoming reality continues to increase. For individual stocks, I still favor second-tier stocks, and the momentum-building rally of third-tier stocks remains expected.
Appendix — this ID's suggestion:
Chán Zhōng Shuō Chán
2006-11-29 15:14:38
From a standpoint of healthy market development, this ID's suggestion for the market is: first let the Shenzhen Component Index break through its historical high of 6,103, then Shanghai follows. Correct after the breakout — that's healthier. Whether the market has any interest in listening to this ID's advice remains to be seen.

Let me get to the point — it's still the stock market. Regarding my CITIC Guoan bought in 2003 and S Ningxinbai bought in 2004, "this ID" wasn't very generous with me, casually saying "Since you're already holding long-term, just keep holding until you can't hold long-term anymore, and there's currently no such signal." You should at least give a 3-month/half-year investment rating — "neutral," "buy," "accumulate," "outperform," "reduce," or something. Or at least your opinion on these two stocks.
============
Sorry, this ID is not a stock commentator and has no interest in such phony rating games. This ID only tells you specific operating methods. For these two stocks, their mid-to-long-term potential hasn't been fully tapped — so of course just keep holding and wait for mid-to-long-term potential to be fully exhausted. Just like someone who's held Moutai long-term — this ID can only tell them to keep holding. In a bull market, predicting the top of any stock is absurd. This is a fundamental difference in methodology.

I think the original punctuation is just fine. Your version feels a bit forced — I don't like it.

Over the past year I've read all your wonderful works and benefited greatly. So I have a heartfelt thing to say: "Sincere thanks! And if you ever have a chance to visit Harbin, I'll definitely come to pick you up."
Also, please help me look at 600007 and 600178 — what's the trend for these two over the coming period? (I bought at the peak in 2001.) Thanks!
==============
Only saw this as I was leaving — let me answer anyway. 600007 — breaking even should not be too difficult, and there may even be pleasant surprises. 600178 — this one's a bit harder. It'll take longer. Be patient.
From the perspective of at least a 5-year bull market, as long as they're not the worst stocks, the vast majority will eventually break through their all-time highs — just look at the patterns from previous bull markets.

Old Man Confucius's thought ultimately points toward "all under heaven." Self-cultivation is ultimately for "all under heaven." Not understanding this means studying in vain. These days stocks have been hot and there are many questions. Wait a few days until the market has a big correction — people will naturally dwindle. That's the nature of stock market people. Without changing fundamentally from the root, tragedies will keep repeating.
So those watching the stock market should also study the Lunyu well. "Half the Lunyu can govern all under heaven" — let alone the stock market.

Host, may I ask a question about moving average systems:
The short, medium, and long-term moving averages you mention are actually not the commonly used market parameters, but are set by individuals according to their own trading habits. For example, one could set 5, 10, and 20 as a short-medium-long system.
Am I understanding this correctly?

Set them according to your own capital size and skill level.

Mid-term potential hasn't been fully realized. As for buying — forget it, because this ID never recommends chasing highs. But if it doesn't even touch the 30-day line, of course hold firmly.
缠中说禅 2006/12/1 11:37:58
This morning's movement is consistent with what was said at the open. Afternoon — volatility continues, but individual stocks basically don't need to worry too much about the overall market.
Please post questions under the new post.
缠中说禅 2006/11/30 11:43:54
This conclusion remains valid:
Chán Zhōng Shuō Chán
2006-11-29 15:14:38
But for individual stocks, it doesn't matter how the overall market moves. The next wave will see widespread individual stock performances — many that hadn't moved much before will have their moment to shine. In fact, during this correction, many stocks have already hit new highs. Individual stocks matter far more than the overall market.
If you must watch an index, watch the Shenzhen Component Index — it's more sensitive and effective than Shanghai's.
As for the Shanghai index, whether the 5-day and 10-day lines give a lip kiss or a deep kiss doesn't really matter much. But the correction after the next wave up will be much larger in scale — this has been said repeatedly.
