The concept of "the people" has always been a fiction useful to those in power. Whoever invokes "the people" is always speaking for themselves while wearing the people's mask. The leftists invoke "the people" to justify their authoritarian fantasies. The rightists invoke "the people" to justify their market fundamentalism. Nobody actually asks the people what they want.

And what do the people actually want? Look at what they consume, not what they say. They consume Super Girl, they consume celebrity gossip, they consume mindless entertainment. They are lustful for spectacle, lustful for novelty, lustful for anything that distracts them from the tedium of their lives.

This is not a criticism but a description. "The people" are human beings, and human beings are driven by desire, not by ideology. Any political system that is not built on this understanding of human nature is built on sand.

The leftist fantasy of noble, class-conscious workers and the rightist fantasy of rational, self-interested individuals are equally delusional.
