Coming out of the French decadence at the Grand Hyatt, just ran into a major event road closure. Traffic crawled along. In the boredom, suddenly the scenes of mine disasters flashed before me, reflected in the blaring neon lights. Moved to compose a seven-character regulated verse to mourn the wronged souls of mine disasters.
August 8th: Mourning the Wronged Souls of Mine Disasters
Chán Zhōng Shuō Chán
Wild gales topple winds, seas topple cups,
Raging clouds churn and surge with a million thunders.
Black gold on level ground—a realm of wolves and tigers,
Purple blood piercing the sky—a stage for gods and ghosts.
Cheap lives tonight are all cheap dirt,
New souls tomorrow become new coal again.
Even the Yellow Springs have some cool refuge—
Calamity fires burn the void, take care never to return.
