Weekend Concert 27: Not-Classical Classical, Not-Romantic Romantic

2007/2/4 14:39:23

When name and substance don't match, it doesn't necessarily mean the work is bad -- it just confuses those who value names over substance. For general music lovers, the most familiar musical periods are Classical and Romantic. In music history, there happen to be two famous symphonies named 'Classical' and 'Romantic,' which actually have nothing to do with true Classicism and Romanticism.

Prokofiev D Major No. 1 Symphony "Classical"

Not-Classical Classical
Not his best symphony,
but certainly his most accessible symphony.
He became himself, not starting from here

Bruckner E-flat Major No. 4 Symphony "Romantic"

Not-Romantic Romantic
Not his best symphony,
but certainly his most accessible symphony.
Starting from here, he became himself.

Beijing's weather is getting truly alarming -- in another 20 years, will we still have winter?

A Beijing winter day in the teens (°C) -- outside, two huge flocks of birds are competing. The sky, though a bit hazy, still has sunlight diffusing through it.

The ice is no longer safe to walk on, and the riverside willows seem ready to bud.

On such a bizarre winter day, this ID will head to the riverbank once more, to listen to the groaning of the ice.

Heading out first, goodbye.
