Weekend Concert 39: Unfinished and Last

2007/7/8 12:04:18

Unfinished does not necessarily mean last; last does not necessarily mean unfinished. Yet both evoke regret and hope -- and how much of human hope ultimately turns to regret? Without regret, one would no longer be human.

Schubert was human. At least he wasn't made into a prodigy like Mozart, or sanctified like Beethoven -- he was simply himself, writing music about nothing but the human condition. Today, people have no music, and music has no people -- only the pop moans of machinery and capital.

True music is always written for history -- the only difference between real music and all other sounds is that real music is meant to puncture reality itself. Resisting reality has nothing to do with puncturing reality. Resisting reality is merely fornicating into existence a future more real than reality. Those who don't resist reality are merely pigs wallowing in it. Resistance and non-resistance -- that is reality itself. And what real music punctures is precisely this reality of the con game between resistance and non-resistance.

Contradictions are all mere tricks; reality, the contradictions within tricks. Wind comes not from heaven, not from hell -- wind is just wind. After the wind passes, water is still water. Floods rise to the sky, climaxes pile upon climaxes -- water is merely water.

Today's program is all Schubert. The first two are both Unfinished: the "C Minor Quartet Movement" and the two-movement "C Major Piano Sonata." The last is his final String Quartet, in G Minor -- a frenzied deconstruction, reality on clay feet.

Heading out, see you tomorrow morning.
