A rainy afternoon. The rain continued to spray. Rainy afternoons are always so long. The sky hung low, covering the sky.

The doorbell rang. Five seconds later, he stood at the door in a suit and tie.

Lamplight, pale as language. Outside the window, the rain was still falling. Futures quotes on the laptop churned restlessly. Smoke clouds rose ceaselessly, paler than the lamplight.

The river sliced through this legendary metropolis. The midnight neon still decayed. Below, that five-star hotel with the mysterious name swayed in a field of brilliant light and shadow.

Hundred-percent Egyptian cotton sheets, a negative-hundred-percent Ming Dynasty cabinet, an ivory-colored Irish linen pillow resting against Tang Dynasty poems on a red-and-gold background. On the Italian oval rotating glass table, the quotes still churned restlessly.

The world's most vulgar name, the world's tallest hotel. The brand-new room hung suspended above the city. Brand-new materials radiated a severe light. Not far away, the TV tower's tip bloomed ceaselessly with sparks of light that scattered toward the sleepless city. Occasionally a few drifted in through the window with the autumn rain, landing on the lacquerware screen at the bedside.
