Chiang Kai-shek absolutely had the right and necessity to take coercive measures against Yang Hucheng and Zhang Xueliang. Just as Yang Hucheng and Zhang Xueliang absolutely had the right and necessity to take coercive measures against Chiang Kai-shek — this is a matter of course. Only fools would do otherwise.

Many people, when examining historical issues, always tack on some pointless moral judgments that have absolutely nothing to do with history. True, Chiang Kai-shek may have committed enough detestable acts. But being detestable doesn't prove anything. When you dance with wolves, you must be on guard at all times. What happened to Yang Hucheng and Zhang Xueliang afterward can only be blamed on their own excessive naivety, their own excessive wishful thinking — forgetting that Old Chiang was the most venomous jackal, and that against a jackal you must leave no opportunity whatsoever.

History is the best textbook, but morality teachers will never understand history. If Chiang Kai-shek hadn't imprisoned Zhang Xueliang and killed Yang Hucheng, would he still have been Chiang Kai-shek? Wouldn't he have become "Chiang the Nice Guy"? And nice guys in political struggles always die the fastest, always ending up as cannon fodder — this is the reality of history, across nations and political spectrums, without exception.

One cannot count on an opponent's stupidity or mistakes to achieve victory. When dancing with the most ferocious jackals, only one who can exploit the jackals without being harmed by them is a true master. Mao Zedong toyed with Chiang Kai-shek in the palm of his hand, proving that Mao Zedong was a greater master than Chiang Kai-shek — it's that simple. What could Chiang Kai-shek possibly object to? Correspondingly, what could Yang Hucheng and Zhang Xueliang possibly object to?

The only thing worth remembering is: history needs no tears and flowers — history is forged only of iron and blood!
